HMS AFFRAY Memorial Service

This year is the 75th anniversary of the Affray disaster. The Order of Service and further details are below.

AFFRAY MEMORIAL SERVICE – Sunday 19th April 2026

Parade Marshall – Stevie Thorpe, Chairman, Gosport Submarine Association

Rig of the day (preferred) – SA members - SA blazer and tie, white shirt, grey trousers, black shoes and socks. Serving personnel - uniform including medals

All phones off or silent

 

ALL Timings are approximate – the service will continue without delays

10.30            Assemble at memorial

10.40            Mayor and Consort arrive – greeted and escorted by Vice Chairman

10.45            Parade fall in

10.45+          Welcome by Gosport SA President; Capt. Chris Groves RN (Rtd)

10.45+          Story of the Affray by Chairman

10.50+          The Worshipful, the Mayor of Gosport Councillor Kirsten Bradley

10.55            Chaplain (Rev Ralph Barber KHC)

11.00            Parade to Attention - Pipe the Still

11.02            Whilst still at attention, Chairman;

“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun and in the morning – We will remember them”

All Response;  “We will remember them”

11.02+          Pipe the Carry On

O/C –            Parade stand at ease

 

Laying of wreaths led by Gosport SA and her Worship the Mayor followed by family and others

Final words from the Chaplain and the submariners prayer.

 

Parade to Attention, Up Spirts for those that have them, turning right dismiss

 

Retire to the Gosport Masonic Hall, 5 Clarence Road, Gosport. PO12 1BB for buffet reception. Bar will be open.
